The Magnet Recognition Program® recognizes health care organizations for quality patient care, interdisciplinary collaboration, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. Developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), Magnet® is the leading source of successful nursing practices and strategies worldwide. Less than 10% of hospitals in the United States hold this designation.

Magnet designation achievement supports our goal, Cultivating Healthy Communities and Belonging for All, as identified in the UVA Health 2022-2032 Strategic Plan. Our Chief Nursing Officer, Kathy Baker, explained the importance of Magnet in her letter to University Medical Center nurses:

“This recognition is an honor reserved for organizations that demonstrate commitment to transformational leadership, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice, and new knowledge and innovation. As a result, Magnet organizations serve their patients at the highest level by achieving exemplary performance in nurse-sensitive patient outcomes”.

Our past designations: 2006, 2015, 2020
