Excellence in Relationship-Based Caring Award

The Nursing Professional Governance Organization (NPGO) will honor one professional nurse from the University Medical Center for Excellence in Relationship-Based Caring.

Purpose of Recognition: To recognize a nurse who demonstrates the practice of Relationship Based Care, our care delivery model at University Medical Center. 

Who is Eligible: Direct care and non-direct care nurses

Eligibility:

  • Nominees must have been employed by University Medical Center for at least 12 months.
  • Nominees must have completed their area orientation by time of submission.
  • The nominee’s manager/direct supervisor must support the nomination.
  • Any University Medical Center employee or UVA School of Nursing student may nominate an RN for this award.

Criteria:

A specific example must be submitted for each criterion to be considered complete. These examples should have occurred within the last 12 months and be written as narratives or stories consistent with the award criteria. Any clinical acts referenced must be consistent with policies and procedures outlined by UVA Health University Medical Center. Documentation submitted should describe caring that goes beyond the expected behaviors associated with providing competent and compassionate nursing care. To submit a robust and competitive nomination, please ensure to elaborate as much as possible with specific examples of behaviors identified. Providing more than one example and telling a story is strongly encouraged and will elevate the quality of your nomination.

Written nominations should demonstrate:

  • COMPASSION: Demonstrates exceptional acts of caring that go beyond the expected behaviors associated with providing competent and compassionate nursing care.
  • ALIGNMENT WITH RBC: Actively partners with colleagues, patients and families to assess needs related to the team member or patient experience and employs problem-solving techniques to influence change within the organization. Our care delivery model, Relationship-based Care (RBC), is evident in their practice.
  • PROMOTES POSITIVE SAFETY CULTURE: Nominee demonstrates a dedication to a culture of patient safety and error prevention.
  • CULTURAL COMPETENCE: Demonstrates sensitivity to diversity and the ability to provide care to patients with diverse values, beliefs and behaviors. Applies available resources to meet patients’ social, cultural, and linguistic needs.
