Academic Progression

As an Academic Medical Center and nursing profession, we are committed to lifelong learning.  The growth and development of our UVA Health University Medical Center Registered Nurses is a high priority. We continue to pursue our goal of maintaining workforce with greater than 80% of nurses holding a BSN or higher nursing degree to align with best practices, as the literature shows better patient outcomes with higher percentages of BSN prepared RNs.

To support our nursing colleagues in achieving a BSN degree or higher, the University Medical Center provides significant resources and structure to encourage and support academic progression.

The NPGO Professional Development Committee and Nursing Cabinet provide oversight and decision-making for our organization's nursing degree goal for UVA Health University Medical Center Registered Nurses.

In reviewing the data, the committees approved a goal to maintain a rate of ≥ 80% for FY26.
