Peer Review
Nursing Peer Review
Why do we participate in peer review? Because it makes us better. It helps us identify our strengths through others’ eyes and helps us identify our blind spots about our own practice. The opportunity to sit with a peer and talk about aspects of our practice where we feel confident and how we would like learn and grow can be a transformative experience. Peer review is outlined in the ANA Scope and Standards and Code of Ethics. It is a professional responsibility and expectation.
UVA Nurses engage in several forms of peer review:
- Appraisal related peer review (all nurses, all levels, all settings):
- One non-self-selected- mid-year, typically in late fall or early winter
- One self-selected -typically in early spring
- Clinical Career Ladder Advancement
- “In the moment” peer review/feedback
The NPGO Professional Development Committee is the owner of this professional responsibility, providing oversight to the annual process and resources to make peer reviews meaningful and streamlined.
