Patient Care Technician Program
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) program is a series of in-person classes aimed to enhance the skill set of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and support onboarding of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) transitioning into the inpatient PCT role. With completion of the program, the CNA may be promoted into the PCT role within UVA Health Medical Center. EMTs who complete this program will have met their Human Resources onboarding requirement to maintain their inpatient PCT role.
New CNA and EMT Applicants
The PCT program consists of 7 consecutive classes held on Thursdays from 8:00-12:00. In-person attendance is required. The program is offered quarterly with Module 1 starting the first Thursday in the months of February, May, August, and November.
Participants receive didactic from a variety of UVA Health subject matter experts and complete hands-on skill demonstrations in a simulation setting. Attendance/completion of all 6 modules is required prior to testing in Module 7. A total of 24 hours is spent in classroom and skill simulation time. The participant is expected to be supported by unit RNs to perform each skill and complete a skill validation checklist on the unit.
